FAREWELL
TO FULTON SIXTH GRADERS
|
| On June 4th, Fulton sixth graders celebrated their successes as
they prepared to move on to junior high school. Students read speeches
and performed two songs for parents, families and teachers. Students
also watched a "photo album" slide show. Mr. Bob O'Brien
from the American Legion presented the annual American Legion Award.
Fulton students Jessica Benson and Joey Welty won the award. Brittany
Helbing and Cody Smothers received the honorable mention award. |

Mrs. Judy Syke, who has taught at Fulton School for
24 years, retired at the end of the 2002-2003 school year. CLICK

A
FUN SCHOOL YEAR ENDS WITH "FUN"
|
| All Fulton students participated in a great Fun Day on June 3rd,
organized by Mr. Carney. Students played numerous games, such as
water balloon toss, relay races, tug of war and more. |

AWARDS
ASSEMBLY HONORS STUDENTS, TEACHERS
MRS. SYKE RETIRES AFTER 33 YEARS
|
| Fulton students received many awards on June 3, 2003, at the Third
Trimester Awards Assembly. In addition to student awards, several
teachers received recognition. Mrs. Nugent was honored for her national
math award and Mrs. Duehr was recognized for her Gold Star Award.
Several teachers are also departing Fulton School. Mrs. Snitker
was given a certificate for her 11 years at Fulton. Mrs. Snitker
is moving to Kennedy School next year. Mr. Manternach was recognized
as well. He is moving to Hempstead High School full-time. Finally,
a long-time Fulton teacher was given special recognition. Mrs. Syke,
who has taught for over 33 years (24 of them at Fulton!) is retiring.
The Fulton third graders, led by Mrs. Slade, performed a wonderful
farewell song that expressed their appreciation of Mrs. Syke. On
behalf of the Fulton staff, students and community, we wish all
of these teachers well in the future and we thank them for their
years of service to Fulton School! |

SIXTH
GRADERS LEARN TEAMWORK AT FOUR MOUNDS
|
| Fulton sixth graders went to Four Mounds the last week of May
2003. As you can see below, the students participated in exciting
ropes course activities and other team-building games. |

FULTON
SCHOOL AWARDED $18,000 DRA GRANT
Fulton School is thrilled to receive a grant from the Dubuque
Racing Association for the amount of $18,000. The money will be
used to purchase books for the school library. Fulton School wishes
to thank the DRA for this amazing gift.

SYKE'S CLASS BUILD DUBUQUE REPLICAS
|
| Third graders in Mrs. Syke's class built some amazing replicas
of Dubuque sites! Check out just a few of their wonderfully detailed
models! Pictured below are: the Courthouse, City Hall, the 4th Street
Elevator, Julien Dubuque Monument, Shot Tower, Julien Dubuque Bridge,
the Log Cabin, the Arboretum, Lock and Dam 11 and Five Flags. |

LOVELY DAY TO PLANT FLOWERS
|
|
Every month we go to Stonehill. This month we went to Stonehill
to plant flowers and play chess, checkers, bingo and puzzles.
Joe, Andy, Amanda, Haley, Shanika, Zach and Tyler were all working
outside for the whole day. Everyone else was inside with older
people for most of the time. Then we went on the bus and went
back to school.

FIFTH
GRADERS MAKE A PROJECT...AND IT'S FOR THE BIRDS
|
|
On May 22, we started the construction of our bird houses. But
before we did that we had to plan it out. We planned the length,
width, and area. After that we started building. We used wood,
nails and sanding blocks. Everybody's was unique. Special thanks
to George Ness, Dave Atchison and Betty Glass, Mr. Plein, Mr.
Koppes and Mr. Hansen for helping build our bird houses.

"BLAST
TO THE PAST" PREMIERES
|
|
The Fulton film "Blast to the Past" premiered on May
20 at 1:45 p.m. in the school gym. Parents and families viewed
the movie at 7:00 p.m. Students displayed their models, artwork,
costumes, props, script and more before and after the movie showing.

starting May 26. Here is the schedule for the movie:
Mondays at 3:30 p.m., Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m., Wednesdays at 8:00
p.m., Thursdays at 3:30 p.m. and Fridays at 3:30 p.m.

| IT'S
SHOWTIME! "BLAST TO THE PAST" SET TO PREMIERE MAY 20 |
| After nearly six months of planning and work, after seven weeks
of filming, the sixth grade movie "Blast to the Past"
is ready for its May 20 premiere. The movie, about four student
time travelers, involved a great deal of student participation.
Students wrote the script, acted in the movie, painted background
artwork, built scale model miniatures, performed music for the soundtrack,
made props, assisted with the video editing, and more. The movie
premieres at 1:45 p.m. for the school and at 6:30 p.m. for parents
and families. The movie is also accompanied by a documentary, "Making
History" that details the process of making the movie. Following
the premiere, "Blast to the Past" will be on local television
and also on the Dubuque Schools website for viewing. In the meantime,

STUDENTS
VISIT STONEHILL
|
|
Thursday, May 15 was Celebration Day for the fourth graders at
Fulton. They held their celebration on Stonehill Center. Almost
everyone that came did something special. Kianna's family came
and watched everyone. Colton, Jordan H, Nico, Josie, Katlyn and
Shauna did a dance called Yankee Doodle. Nicole McConnell and
her mom came with their little cousin. Alicia, Cheri, Nicole and
Amanda did a song called "God Bless the USA" and "This
Land is Your Land". Erin and her grandma came to watch. Tiffany
and her dad came to watch also. Erin and Cheri sang the national
anthem. Dahson, Tamara, Danny, Dahvriel, Tania, Mrs. Rhone and
the littlest baby came. Tyler's family also came. Tyler played
the saxaphone. He played two songs. Mrs. Stevens and some other
people played African drums. Eric and Tyler both designed a quilt
and did it completely different. Jordan G., Josh, Kathlyn, Nico,
Colton and Cameron did a rap. Some people did a little play. Andy
Ott played the piano and a viola. It was truly a celebration.

FOURTH
GRADERS STUDY BONES
|
| Fulton fourth graders have been studying about bones. They performed
a wonderful spring program that included music and theater. Pictured
below are two students with an amazing "Hall of Frame"
poster designed for their expedition. |

ENTERTAINS AND EDUCATES STUDENTS
|
| On May 2nd, Fulton welcomed Steven Elisha as a visiting musical
artist. Mr. Elisha taught students about classical music and even
had students participate in the program. |

YOUNG
WRITERS CONFERENCE BRINGS OUT BEST IN STUDENTS
|
| On April 30th, Fulton sent six top notch students to the Young
Writers Conference in Dubuque. The keynote speaker was Maribeth
Boelts, a published children's author. Students participated in
exciting workshops such as creating a fictional character, making
"I Spy" poems and a session on riddles. |

GUITARIST
STRUMS IT UP AT FULTON
|
| On Wednesday, April 16th, Jason Vieaux performed his classical
guitar for Fulton. He taught students about the parts of the guitar
and how to make different "voices". He played music that
was written over 400 years ago and music from South America. He
also answered many questions such as "how much do guitars cost?"
(some cost $500-5,000). It was a new and exciting experience for
students. |
